The year is 1967 and the Vietnam War has taken a terrible toll on America. When a high school senior from California who enlisted in the army is killed, his mother sends her six-year-old son Joey to live with his father in Hawaii. At first, the experience seems great: Dad is finally home from work so they can cook together and play outside with his new friend. But then it becomes clear that Dad’s heart isn't in it—he's just going through the motions while Joey searches for someone to be a real parent to him again. So Joey tries to turn his new friend into one. Officials said they were investigating the death of the 26-year-old soldier who was killed yesterday in Baghdad during combat operations against insurgents. He died after being hit by small arms fire while on patrol in western Baghdad. Another officer was wounded by automatic weapons fire in the same incident. His name was not released. The soldier was assigned to the First Brigade Combat Team of the First Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas. His father had told the Associated Press his son was a good soldier. "He had his share of fights, but all in all he's a good kid," said the father, who asked not to have his name used. "He never had any real trouble with anyone."
